Rothmans Porsches gather at Goodwood FOS for Jochen Mass tribute

This year's Festival of Speed was the first since the sad loss of Jochen Mass. As well as being a legend of Group C and motor racing in general, Jochen had a close connection to Goodwood and was a regular attendee of the Members Meeting, Revival and Festival of Speed. Goodwood events will not be the same without his warm smile in the paddock. To celebrate his incredible life we brought together our four Rothmans Porsches, each raced in period by Jochen, for a tribute. We lined up three cars at the prestigious display spot at the entrance to the drivers club with the fourth car running up the hill throughout the weekend.

A highlight of the weekend was the Jochen Mass tribute run up the hill. This saw Jochen’s Sauber-Mercedes C11 and Porsche 962-008 take a parade run up the hill together. John Watson took the wheel of the 962, having known Jochen since the early 70s they have been great friends, teammates and rivals. This was a truly special moment as the crowds came together to pay tribute to one of motorsports most respected legends.

Derek Bell was also celebrated during a balcony moment on the Friday. The moment marked 50 years since his first Le Mans win, the Gulf Mirage in 1975. Only a Rothmans car would be suitable for a Derek Bell celebration so he drove 962-008 up to the Goodwood House in front of the crowds. Derek raced this car throughout the 1987 season and finished on the podium of every race making this a very appropriate car. Once the 962 was parked in front of the house Derek joined his family on the iconic balcony for an interview with Karun Chandhok.

A number of Derek’s teammates also joined him on the balcony including Tom Kristensen, Jackie Oliver and David Brabham. Jacky Ickx also watched on with a smile from within the crowd. Derek also shared a great moment with his son Justin with which he scored a Le Mans podium with in the F1 GTR in 1995. This wasn’t their first time as teammates, they also shared a Richard Lloyd Porsche 962 at Le Mans in 1992 finishing 5th in class.

In addition to the balcony moment, Derek drove the car up the hill in a variety of other sessions across the weekend. When reunited with his race cars his enthusiasm is always infectious, and his pace up the hill never fails to impress!
